The one comment about Microsoft banning people for playing Halo 4 online early was wrong, they don’t ban anyone for playing games early. They are banning the people who illegally downloaded copies off torrent sites and played it that way. But they will not and do not ban for legal bought copies.
Sorry about that, I tried to do some kind of warning in the Podcast topic description up above but I guess I maybe should have maybe interrupted the podcast and recorded a little spoiler disclaimer. I really just wasn’t sure what to do.
What would be your preference for handling a situation like that in the future?
The twist in Bioshock fell completely flat for me. They try to convince you you were being “controlled” the whole time, but the gameplay is still exactly the same even after the control mechanism is removed by that woman. Seems like a weak way to justify the linear design with the facade of being deep.
That’s the “twist”. Man, they could have at least made the controls sluggish through out the game prior to said “twist”, and then jump the controls up to normal afterwards. What a waste of a potentially awesome mechanic. I’m sad now.
That sounds like the worst idea I’ve ever heard. People would have been frustrated and pissed off if the controls were sluggish or hindering through 4/5 of the entire game. They would have stopped playing very quickly. You don’t hinder the controls of a player for the sake of some plot twist. Furthermore it would make no sense because that is not how the mind control worked. He wasn’t a puppet on strings. The character still has free will most of the time, and every time they say “would you kindly” to take away that free will the action is forced on you in the game, so in game mechanics that is the equivalent of the player being mind controlled.
By gameplay I meant the linear progression, ie. get objective, complete objective, get next objective. Even after the mind control is removed the system remains the same – you’re given orders and you can’t progress until you fulfil them them. They try to convince you that you were being controlled by being forced to complete objectives, but nothing changes even after the control is removed. The twist is meaningless.
Ah ok, that makes more sense then. I figured the twist would have been around the half way mark, and I didn’t mean REALLY sluggish, just enough so that later on it would be noticeable that they aren’t sluggish anymore. Also, I didn’t know it was a keyword thing. There are till plenty of parts the games that haven’t been “spoiled” for me.
I think the point with Kickstarter is it’s simply a bigger site with a broader audience and they’ve (Star Citizen devs) got a better chance of raking in more capital if they went and used it.
On the “sexist joke”, sure it might’ve been funny or cute the first few times but you gotta know when to stop. Isn’t that common sense? Just adding some perspective.
On Germany, IIRC the original Wolfenstein 3D actually was heavily censored and even banned for a certain period in Germany. Maybe the inclusion of it in the new Doom 3 package was more of a joke or a throwback?
Yay! Semi-regular podcasts again! On another note, I really think you should list the names of the people in each podcast as part of the text of the post for each one. It would make it much easier to keep track.
Just a quick comment. You say that Bioshock doesn’t feel as new anymore because other games have taken influence from it. This is kinda true with the atmosphere of the game, but Bioshock ripped off its core gameplay from System Shock 2, then made it worse by dumbing it down.
This is true, but I wouldn’t say “ripped off” because I’m pretty sure that developers that made SS2 were involved in Bioshock. It would have been more like applying what they learned.
Sure, I could listen to this one hour podcast of people talking about videogames they apparently can’t look at a wiki page for, much less hold actual interest in. They might even tell a joke every five minutes. It’d be fun learning exactly jack shit about anything, other than possibly how to be a boring, self indulgent shithead who doesn’t play games on the internet.
but nah
HOLY SHIT FUCKING FINALLY. BEEN WAITING FOR A PODCAST WITH CAMERON.
gee, i sure do love listening to that monotone voice complain about every game in existence!

We never really specified legal or illegal means, but the implication of the game “leaking” and banning for it does imply it was obtained illegally.
Nice spoilers for Dishonored and trying to play it off as it wasn’t one.

Spoiler jingle
The realism arguments are pretty silly when it comes to Star Citizen. Yeah, the realism takes a hit, but it’s a necessary evil.

Dead Space was EA’s answer to not owning all of the System Shock rights when Looking Glass died. That’s why it’s like that. The more you know.
