Bastion Developer Reveals Their Next Game

Supergiant Game’s indie action RPG Bastion was one of the big surprise hits of 2011, receiving widespread acclaim and going on to be ported to a wide variety of systems.

Two years later, they are ready to reveal their next game – Transistor. The game appears to be another action RPG, bearing many similarities to Bastion, though various improvements to presentation are apparent. The official plot summary, taken from Supergiant’s site, is as follows:

In Transistor, players assume the role of a young woman who gains control of a powerful weapon after a mysterious group of assailants nearly kills her with it. Now she must fight from street to street against forces that will stop at nothing to recover the weapon. During the course of the adventure, players will piece together the Transistor’s mysteries as they pursue its former owners.

As can be heard in the trailer, Bastion vocalist Ashley Barrett and composer Daniel Korb have returned to work on Transistor, which likely means we have a similarly memorable soundtrack in store for us.

Supergiant will be putting together a FAQ for the game in the near future, and will be answering fan questions via their Facebook and Twitter pages. Additionally, the game is expected to appear at PAX East later this week.

    More hipster trash.

Tell me this is a joke poking fun at /v/?

Anyway, looks similar to Bastion, but I’m not complaining because I really liked Bastion. So naturally I’m interested to see how this turn out.

        Same old tired crap.

I’d expect them to maybe try their odds on 1 or 2 other new Ip’s before they started retreading old ground.

  2. Considering what Bastion was, can’t say I’m excited. Art direction looks great, but it will be a damn shame if it’s the only positive thing that can be said about it.

Plus I’m expecting an abysmal reference to Minecraft or a YouTube meme.

Don’t forget the music. And the story. And the upgrade system. And the gameplay in general. And, actually, everything about Bastion.

  3. It looks exactly like Bastion.
As in, it might as well just have swapped the sprites.

bastion was a solid action rpg. it appears they are using the same engine as bastion for this game, which i dont think is a bad thing. im interested in seeing more gameplay from it

Oh God I can’t wait for more bad ass music. I don’t even care if it’s a direct carbon copy of Bastion, the game play was a lot of fun.

I have never played Bastion. But from just looking at the trailer, it looks no different from Bastion. The animation looked weird, like it was missing some frames. The character concepts, especially the main heroine looked very bland; but the enemy looked more interesting. Overall, if I was going to get a game, this is one game that is not worth the year wait.

Sorry, did we watch the same video? Of the three or four character designs in the trailer, at least three (Red, the small eye things, and the small eye things around the body thing) were very distinct and used colour to striking effect.

“Overall, if I was going to get a game, this is one game that is not worth the year wait.”

What does that even mean? I just . . . what? Do you live in some sort of alternate universe where getting a game means that you can’t buy anything else until that game comes out?

      • Sagawa on said:

Well let me correct myself. I realized that it was late when I posted the message, but what I was trying to say was that “If I had a choice, that this game would not be worth the wait.” Obviously I would be buying other games, but waiting for this game would not be one of the must have games.

  7. “2 years since bastion”

Fuck me where has the time gone

I love the painted tiles look. I hope the game shares the weapon/mechanic variety, and to the point game play I got outta Bastion.

I really hope they put it on the iOS from the get-go. I won’t have a home after March 2014, so all my games will need to be able to be played on-the-go.

That’s not my point. He’s using a tired old phrases called “hipster” to describe the game. Ironically the phrase is commonly seen on /v/ when used to describe an indie game they despise.

    ALREADY BOUGHT

It’s isometric and an action game, probably with light RPG elements. And that’s about where the similarities end. Well, maybe you can count “graphics that have some amount of color”, but the general design is clearly different from Bastion’s.

I don’t think anyone complaining about it being too similar to Bastion actually has played Bastion.

  14. Nice aesthetics. I hope the gameplay is good. Bastion’s was too shallow.

We get a soundtrack, and some nice story out of it.
    And nothing more.

    Oh well.
