If you’ve been following Full Spectrum for a bit–and On the Crapper before–you’re likely aware of my issue with Dota 2. I say “issue” like I had an addiction; maybe I did. But as of a few days ago I’m free of Dota 2.
After 948 hours I decided it was time to stop. I’d told myself, ‘Oh it’s cool. Just keep it around, you’re having fun, just play a match here and there.’ Trouble was I wasn’t playing ‘a match’. I rarely would ever play just one when I’d boot Dota 2 up. I’d play two, four, or even more. Not a big issue, but I wasn’t playing anything else. I was able to stop for a spell when I was playing Deus Ex: HR, but after that first article it was back to Dota 2. I couldn’t seem to stop playing it. Even though I told myself, ‘I’ve got all these other games. I’ll play them soon!’ ”Soon” never came.
Look at all those games I’ve got! Many I’ve hardly touched. That had to change. That–in theory–should be easier now with Dota 2 gone. And when I say “gone” I mean that. I gave all my items away, every last one. I went a step further and deleted the game off my PC. Sure I can install it again, but I’ll have none of my items. Again, that doesn’t stop me from playing if I really wanted to. Yet my thinking is that without the game ready to play at the hit of a button and no items left, my desire will be greatly reduced. Thus far it seems to be working.
What am I going to play right now after I finished popping out a few more words here? I’m in the mood for something brutal. No, not Brutal Legend. I think I’ll play this…
Do you struggle with any games like I did with Dota 2? Maybe TF2 or WoW? Maybe something else entirely?

And this is one reason I detest Steam. Not only can you hardly keep from registering games on it, you’re stuck to a client that nags you to buy things you don’t need, which end up in a pile you may never get to.
Meaning you just wasted your money, versus buying and playing the game you got. If this is what Steam is encouraging, maybe devs should stop making complete games and just release half games at half price, then charge the rest once you’re far enough.
I only spent $2.50 on Dota 2. That was for some wards with a Bane theme to them. I paid anything at all because I thought, ‘Ok, if I’ve spent over 700 hours [at that point] on this game, I should probably give Valve a few bucks.’
Dota 2 IS a complete game, it’s a fine game, it’s still in Beta, yes, but it works just fine if you never spend a dime.
Thing is, I wasn’t talking about DOTA 2. That game never will be complete. I mean the rest of the games Steam seems to gobble up thanks to publisher decisions.
Mobile gaming ahoy!
If you’re talking about Square Enix and EA. Otherwise, there’s Catan, Ticket to Ride, the Doom II RPG…
dont worry. it’s pretty easy for me to save all my money and buy only the games i want during the steam sales.
Used to play Team Fortress 2 all of the time until it became unrecognizable following the Australian Christmas update and the item drop system became less fond of me. Then I played Counter-Strike: Source for quite some time and now I play it every once in a while. Torchlight I play for a good few hours whenever I get around to booting it up. I’ve also tried getting back into Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, but it’s too unbalanced to make a habit out of it.
My addictions come and go, really.
Played WoW for a while and just sort of generally fell out of love with it, which, combined with a truly horrific quest glitch, ultimately made me give it up. From there, I migrated to TF2, and the same thing happened, but without the straw that broke the camel’s back moment – the servers I frequented weren’t as enjoyable, and nobody I had on my friends list seemed to be playing at the same time as me.
Currently, I’m absorbed by Left 4 Dead 2, which is the most fun I’ve ever had for five dollars.
I’m so good at not getting attached to a multiplayer game that i only have 6 games on my backlog.
It’s okay, i know i’m amazing.
will miss the bane times but oh well im sure we can play other games that exist
I probably do spend a lot more of my time gaming on Dota 2 than I do on any other game. But unlike you, I actually don’t mind. I have a backlog most likely larger than yours, but that has less to do with Dota 2 and more to do with me always juggling like 20 games at once. Like right now I’m mostly playing Dota 2 but I’ve got Disgaea 2, Arcanum, E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy, Nier, Deadly Premonition and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite I’m playing on the side, and I’m perfectly okay with this.
The game was Bad Company 2. I’d come home from work, eat, play BC2 until midnight or later, sleep, wake up, play it until lunch, eat and then go to work. Rinse, repeat.
I had almost 450 hours in it when I just stopped. I went back to it recently, but I just play for an hour or two every week or when a friend is playing. I can’t understand how I was so calm back then when playing rush.
Now I very rarely have those really close matches when you win or lose by single digit ticket numbers. And that usually happens in conquest.
I’ve played alot of League of Legends (booo!, yes I know…), I have a really hard time beating games, which is why I feel bad playing these multiplayer/mmo games when I too have a mountain of untouched games sitting in my steam/gog lists.
As of the 4th I vowed that I will stop gaming completely for a year, at least. For me there are just too many projects in my life that I’ve let slip away from me, especially in my free time due to games.
But I won’t be saying goodbye to games before one final LAN this weekend :D
I hope my withdrawal symptoms aren’t too bad.
Well funny timing here considering I just started playing. It’s not as bad as people make it out to be and I’m having fun.
