A New Assassin’s Creed Game is Coming in 2013

AssCreed3_review01

According to news over at Venture Beat Ubisofts’ a new Assassin’s Creed game will be getting a new installment later on in 2013–this year.  Considering we’ve seen at least once new game in the series since 2007 this should come as no surprise.  According to a conference call to investors (I’m getting this from Venture Beat, but where they got it I have no idea, they fail to mention any source at all, take this with a touch of salt) Ubisoft chief executive officer Yves Guillemot said the following:

“We are delighted and proud to announce today that in [fiscal 2014], we will introduce an all-new Assassin’s Creed hero,” said Guillemot. “With an all new time period, we expect it to be another major leap forward for the franchise. [This] is the benefit of multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the project, each [gets] several years to make their versions of an Assassin’s Creed game.”

Will we finally see a female in the lead on a full blown Assassin’s Creed game (I’m not counting Liberation), will it be that guy we saw a picture of a bit ago, or maybe just another run-of-the-mill male lead.  I didn’t dislike Desmond, but I never had any reason to like him very much either.  I felt he was as generic as a hero could be.  We’ll see what news develops and update when we have more info.

Damn it, can’t we just get a new game after 7 games (counting the console games)?

  2. As someone who played multiple entries in the series and hated each one while only buying one actual version, I am now ready to jump in. Ubisoft you nailed it! This will be the perfect entry for the Assassin’s Creed series! Oh wait I am doing their PR for them

  3. Even my friend who’s a total Assassin’s creed fanboy and only swears by it is sick of the games, what the hell is Ubisoft thinking, do they want to destroy their own IP?

If they’re still following the setting design philosophy they espoused in the early days, then I would actually look forward to a game with a female protagonist set in the Spanish Civil War or possibly WW1. However, it wouldn’t make me break my boycott of Ubisoft until they 1) release a full apology for insulting critics of Splinter Cell Conviction and the upcoming Splinter Cell Blacklist and 2) dismiss David Footman for his support of torture* and rework Blacklist to not feature torture being committed by the protagonist(s).

I do not expect that they will ever do such intelligent things as those, so I expect my boycott of Ubisoft will continue indefinitely. If the soundtrack is any good I might arrange to send money directly to Jesper Kyd or whoever composed it, however.

*: David Footman, director of SC: Blacklist, heavily implied that he supports the use of torture by US covert operatives, law enforcement agents, and armed servicepeople (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-09-28-fan-response-to-splinter-cell-blacklist-is-a-kneejerk-reaction-and-uninformed), which is reflected in Blacklist. Previous games in the Splinter Cell series (except Conviction) maintained a fairly strong subtext that torture was not only immoral but also futile in extracting information from people. Conviction reversed this trend by actually requiring the protagonist to torture numerous people in order to advance the plot of the game, and for that I regret purchasing it.

While I support the right of people to tell stories how they want to, I reserve the right to not buy into anything I disagree with, and to persuade others to do the same.

    • Well you can reserve your right to not buy it and you can be offended but trying to make them change their product and or form because it doesnt adhere to your taste is a bit hypocritical to your statement that you “support the right of people to tell stories how they want to”

They can tell whatever story they want, but I don’t have to buy it if I don’t want to. Such is the heart of the standard market economy tool of persuasion, the boycott. I can also suggest they do something I would be willing to buy into, but they don’t have to listen. I’d still take a bullet to protect their right to craft the product they want to make (just let me get my vest and Quickclot first) but I don’t have to buy it if I don’t like it.

  10. Oh god. Not another one.
It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t push all of this END OF THE WORLD crap on us in 1, 2, 2-2, 2-3 and 3 (In my opinion it would have been a much better series of games if they focused on the assassinations and not on desmond, the blandiest man in the world)

I enjoyed 1, sure, the gameplay was repetitive, but YOU WERE A ASSASSIN. 2 was okay. Brotherhood was okay, except for the cop out of a final boss and revelations was just terrible. I have not played 3, but I hear bad things about it.

How do we fix assassins creed? Take the modern rubbish out, put more assassinations in, rework the stealth (I hate the stealth. Make it like MGS or something, not just a slight upgrade to generic FPS stealth level) and the combat (To make the combat a bit more harder, instead of mashing square to win) and get rid of the 2deep4you overarching storyline.
