Dragon Quest VII Remake Announced

Square Enix, that master of remaking, releasing and rehashing their decades-old games to each and every system that might prove successful, announced recently that they will be remaking Dragon Quest/Warrior VII for the 3DS. This news comes via a scan of Japanese magazine Jump. This will be the fourth Dragon Quest title to receive a remake, with Dragon Quests 4-6 getting a similar treatment on the DS.

Very little information is available at the moment regarding what, if anything, will be new about this update to the PSOne classic, though it seems a significant graphical update can be expected. The current release date is set for sometime in February.

  1. I think there’s an inherent issue with this type of remaking that Squeenix doesn’t quite see. Most of the young ‘uns who didn’t play the game back in the day probably won’t be interested because kids just don’t really seem to like old games, while most of the people who would be interested in the game probably already played it and own it.

Then again, the game is already completely finished, so it’s probably cheap as hell to port it.

The thing is with lengthy RPGs like Dragon Quest (7 being the longest) it is much more enjoyable to play on a handheld than it is to sit in front of a TV. Having it available on a handheld really makes that 100+ hour playtime go by much smoother.

  2. Well, they must be selling well or they wouldn’t take the time to remake so many of their games. Granted, the majority of the purchasers are probably older players who have already played the games or people who always wanted to but never got around to it when they were younger.

Regardless, I don’t see it as a problem at all as long as they’re selling well. Why is it a problem if younger gamers don’t play it? If a remake won’t get them to play it, then nothing will. Just because younger players might not be interested in it, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth remaking.

Well… this is something that would help me justify a 3DS at least.

  4. Sadly another nail in the Vita’s coffin.

And they won’t remake Final Fantasy VII, even though that’s the game everyone who would want to buy a remake wants to play.

    • The cost would be an order of magnitude higher, and your statement isn’t even true in Japan — where portables do well…

I said ‘everyone’ not ‘anyone’. Sure this may do well but there’s the equivalent to the arbitrage sitting there; the money on the table and they won’t pick it up.

Can’t say I’m surprised from the company that rehashed CT on what, 6 systems by now?
