Skyrim Patch Files Hint at Return to Morrowind

It’s long been rumored that players would eventually be taking a trip to Morrowind at some point in Skyrim‘s DLC expansions. What with nearly the entirety of Tamriel lying in a roughly modeled state beyond Skyrim’s borders, anything could be possible. Some digging through the files of patch 1.8, released for PC yesterday by Bethesda, might contain some hints confirming these rumors.

Fan investigation uncovered all sorts of interestingly named files, included one making reference to Solstheim, a Nord colony last seen in Morrowind‘s second expansion pack, Bloodmoon. In addition to files that make further references to various locations in and around that area, there are hints at features such as dragon riding. The patch files seem to indicate that the DLC will be called Dragonborn, which… sounds pretty damn uninspired. Hopefully that’s a working title, although Bethesda did trademark that name earlier this year.

If these rumors are true, Dragonborn would be the third expansion released for Skyrim so far, following Dawnguard and Hearthfire, which both came out this year. Bethesda is saying nothing, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Fingers crossed for spears?

I would expect some of that to come in, but, say, footprints might be a problem because consoles.

And speaking of which, seriously Bethesda, pull it together. Get that stuff on PS3. Your track record with it is dodgy at best, and this looks like the make or break moment for securing a fair chunk of faith in your ability from fans.

      • From what I’ve heard the problem is memory related. Every time you kill something, drop items, move things around, etc. it places a marker in the memory. Because of how the PS3 is kind of low on memory, those markers eventually fill it to capacity. Dawnguard isn’t working on PS3 because there just isn’t enough memory for all that new content to be added on to the existing game, which by itself was barely working out. They either need to rewrite how their entire engine works or just wait until the next gen playstation. Blame Bethesda for weird ass coding and Sony for cheaping out on the memory when designing the PS3.

Yeah, I understand most of things have been touched on by modders. But I was talking about how they can improve Skyrim on the consoles, and like my friend said, “There’s something about DLC, the officiality of it. It feels better than mods since you know the developer has given their approval and put their twist on it.”

The footprint mod. Works and looks neat.

Isn’t it more likely that they just trademarked dragonborn because that’s the title of the main character?

  3. People not totally impressed with your latest game? Charge them to re-experience the last game in the series they actually liked!

Yeah. One huge reason I have not bought a bit of DLC for this game. Crossbows were part of Morrowind as well, yet we were told the engine couldn’t handle them in Oblivion.

While I’m annoyed at them bringing in parts of Morrowind for this DLC pack, the beta-testing thing with Dawnguard really got my blood boiling. That was blatant laziness to me, and I won’t support their DLC because of it.

    morrowind was retconned though right?

as in, i believe one of the novels after oblivion came out said in a passing mention that morrowind was completely destroyed or something.

      • I believe there was a massive volcanic disaster or something that wiped out most of Vvardenfell. Hence all the Dunmer refugees in Skyrim. I think mainland Morrowind survived though.

The event you are thinking of is referred to as The Red Year, in which Dagoth-Ur blew up due to a chain of events caused by the impact of Baar Dau with the city of Vivec.
