WiiU Experience

For two hours this Saturday, I was allowed into a small studio space that Nintendo rented to house the WiiU Experience in Downtown Hollywood. It wasn’t as packed as the subway during the morning, but there were dense crowds around the more popular games. After a lap around the room, talking into my phone, I had a list of the games on display; ZombiU, Pikmin 3, Game & Wario, Ninja Gaiden Razor’s Edge, Wii Fit U, Just Dance 4, Batman Arkham City, Sing Party, Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, New Super Mario Brothers U, and three games from Nintendo Land.

There was also a demo of a competitive mode for ZombiU where one player was a lone survivor in a small, closed map and the other player spawned zombies. The goal was for either player to capture the most flags, King of the Hill style, in addition to trying to kill the survivor. I was immediately reminded of an old Source mod I played years ago called Zombie Master.

While the survivor used the Pro Controller, the player doing zombie management used the Gamepad to spawn zombies according to spawn cost. While no rep could tell me if this game mode would be expanded to have more than two players, or if it supported online play, the game felt like it was still in development. ZombiU was easily one of the more popular games, and from what I remember at E3 it looks like it has gotten some UI beautification.

Most of the games I saw at the WiiU Experience looked the same as they did at E3. Pikmin 3 still didn’t seem to utilize the Gamepad beyond a real time eye in the sky camera, but I did notice that Wonderful 101’s interface had also gotten a bit of polish compared to what I remember. I didn’t get a chance to play it and see if the gamepad’s touch screen was any better with 101 than my last encounter, unfortunately.

After downing a free soda, a frosted sugar cookie with the WiiU logo printed on it, and a cup of shaved ice, the two hours were wrapped up and they gave away a few items in a last minute game of WiiU trivia. Herded out a side door and given a chocolate mustache pop, my eyes began to adjust to the mid day sun and I started my walk back to the train.

Is there anything you would like to know about the event? Anything I didn’t mention? Ask in the comments section!

  1. So was Bayonetta 2 there? And if so did you try it/hear any feedback from people who had?
