Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD hits Steam

It’s taken nearly the better part of 2012 for the HD version of Stranger’s Wrath to finally make its way to the PC after the PS3 got the update in December of last year.  For those that already own the game or the Oddbox you’ll get a free bump up the the new version (mine is updating as I type this).  If you haven’t played Stranger’s Wrath before there’s no better time to grab this.  It’s one of my favorite games of all time and I bought the SD version knowing this was on the way.  I can’t wait to jump back into the Oddworld after years away, it’ll be a treat.

Here’s some comparison shots.

The game is currently 30% off on Steam making it a paltry U.S. $6.99.  That’s a steal for this title.

A remember seeing snippets of these games in EGM and other magazines, but never got around to play them. Maybe someone should do an Oddworld retrospective, given this news?

  2. fucking finally, it was supposed to come out when, back in march or something?

Feb, actually. I hope they actually fucking fixed some of the movement bugs as well.

      • They did not fix the movement bugs. The whole thing feels like a bad port. Judging by the forums, people are experiencing a number of problems.

Also, you use the arrow keys to change ammunition. That’s comparable to changing weapons in other FPS games. You can rebind them, but you still need four keys.

The whole HD graphics thing is uneven. Some areas look good, others look very lackluster. Check the first town for a lot of low-resolution textures.

Seriously, it took them this long to update their half-broken, unpatched game and it’s still buggy.

Man, that’s a huge bummer, I LOVED Stranger’s Wrath on Xbox. And, I’ve always been a tremendous fan of the Oddworld series. Still, at least Stranger’s Wrath is playable, unlike Munch’s Oddysee.

        • I’ve not noticed any movement bugs. Maybe people think Stranger is supposed to gallop all the time? He’s not. He has to get up to a certain speed before he drops to all fours.

The first town certainly isn’t a graphical dream, but it’s not bad. It’s no TW2 in terms of how it looks, but for $6.99? It’s a steal.

to be fair the game is meant to be played on the gamepad, although configuration for anything that is not a wired 360 controller is a bit of a hassle.

I remember way back when this first released for the original Xbox. I saw all kinds of reviews and trailers for it, and was planning to get it. I never did though. I won’t make the same mistake again.

Now they just need to release it for people who bought the game somewhere other than Steam such as GOG.
