“Xbox Durango Dev Kit” Sells for $20,100

An eBay auction went up recently for what the seller, a user with no previous history called superdae, claims is a development kit for Microsoft’s upcoming successor to the Xbox 360. Very little detail was given for the item in its description, but it went on to sell for a whopping $20,100 nonetheless. Looking through his Twitter, it looks like the proceeds are going towards a Lamborghini.

In short this was most likely a scam and the buyer, whoever they are, can probably expect either a plain old PC worth significantly less than they paid at best or just an empty case at worse. Console manufacturers tend to keep a very close eye on who gets dev units and where they are at all times. They should only be in the hands of major developers actively working on games for the next gen system, so unless somebody managed to steal one from them or Microsoft themselves it’s very unlikely that an individual could get their hands on one.

This is the sort of thing eBay’s Buyer Protection system exists for. If this sale turns out to be fraudulent, superdae will never see a cent. We’ve contacted Microsoft for a response on these events, and will update this story should they get back to us.

10 out of 18 bidders placing $10,000+ in an auction on a very elusive piece of hardware, with virtually no description, and a seller with no selling history.

  5. Suppose this box actually was an Xbox 720, what could one possibly do with one that’s worth paying twenty thousand dollars?
