Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Mod Public Beta Impression

I’m so happy right now. I’ve been waiting for this mod for a long time now, ever since I first heard about it a year ago. So here it is, finally, the Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Mod is coming further into the light.

The Good

You have access to the entire island, and all it contains. Vehicles spawn like roaches, because lets face it, what’s more fun that finding creative ways to destroy the plethora of vehicles available in this game? I would have thought that finding a plane to fly would have been a huge pain in the ass, but I was able to find one fairly quickly once I got to the airport. Also, not only do they spawn quickly, but vehicles are scattered through out the island so you would be hard pressed to walk (or grapple) for more than 2 minutes without running into at least some kind of vehicle.

Another awesome feature that I enjoyed was the ability to “teleport” to some designated locations on the map, more specifically the main airport on the island. Simply opening the chat box (which you do by pressing ‘t’) and typing “/tp airport”. There are several other locations that you can teleport  to, but I’m not going to list them all. This was a thoughtful addition by the developers of the mod because it is kind of a huge pain to get around the island if you don’t have an air vehicle of some kind.

The only confusing part is the fact that the gas station hasn’t been exploded yet

The Bad

Spawn camping. When you spawn you receive a randomized weapon load out, and one of the weapons you can get is the rocket launcher, which is the only weapon that can directly hurt humans (right now). You also get infinite ammo, so you can spawn camp until you get bored, basically. It’s not that big of an issue, though, since right now the movement of others is kind of jumpy and laggy, so you have a good chance of making it out of the spawn safely, but it can still be obnoxious to spawn and die instantly.

The movement of other characters is really off right now. It’s hard to tell what other players are doing, and they often seem to just be floating in the air for no real reason. Everything on your end looks perfect, and runs exactly as if you were just running the regular game, but the other players aren’t in the original game, so it’s quite understandable that there are some issues making them work with the game smoothly.

Every other player has their tag floating above them, along with a huge green health bar, and the distance from you. While this is a nifty way to help you locate people faster to kill them, it can get annoying because of how obnoxiously large they are, especially in high population areas, like the Panau Airport. This a fairly minor complaint, however.

Haters gonna Hate

The possibilities that this mod provides are pretty expansive, considering the scope of it. The entire of island of Panau is included, and there are tons of vehicles to go around. I’ve heard people organizing street racing, base jumping parties at the Mile High Club, I even hopped on a Mumble server where people were flying around together just hanging out. This mod has the ability to be everything from a PvP, everything goes deal, to just a place for people to hang out and play video games together. Once this mod hits full release I definitely see it becoming another DayZ thing, not necessarily where the mod is more popular than the actual game, but where the mod is responsible for a huge revival in sales. Sales figures have probably already started to increase just for the open beta.
