Layoffs Hit TimeGate

The dust has begun to settle in the aftermath of the Aliens: Colonial Marines debacle, and co-developer TimeGate Studios looks to be the ones who will suffer most from it. Today the Houston, Texas-based studio confirmed that a significant portion of their workforce would have to be laid off as a result of the game’s abysmal reception and sales performance.

“Today, we had to make the difficult decision to let go of some great game developers. This is never easy, and we’re doing all we can to assist those developers affected,” TimeGate president Adel Chaveleh told popular gaming news site Polygon. “TimeGate is preparing, as is the entire industry, for the transition to next-generation consoles and new business models. As part of this reinvention, all projects and strategic initiatives continue to move forward at the studio.”

The exact number of employees who will be let go has not been officially released, though Polygon’s supposed inside sources claim that about 25 people have been effected.

TimeGate was originally founded in 1998 and is best known for developing Section 8, the FEAR Files expansion packs, and of course their ill-fated collaboration with Gearbox on Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Gearbox is currently facing accusations and criticism throughout the industry and press for their hand in the Aliens situation, with some evidence suggesting, among other things, that they may have funneled most of the money given to them by SEGA to fund Colonial Marines into instead developing their own Borderlands IP. Despite claims made by Gearbox co-founder Randy Pitchford that TimeGate and Gearbox contributed evenly to the game’s development, it is looking more and more likely that Gearbox had very little interest in seeing the project to completion and only really become involved in a serious capacity in the final months.

    Proof read.

  2. Dimitri says:

It’s a real shame, I actually liked Timegate’s games, Section 8 was a blast, and there Fear games had some of the best gun-play of the series.

  3. Yeesh, if the industry keeps this up it’s going to crash again.

  4. GonnaGetDruids says:

I just want to see Gearbox take a hit from this whole shitstorm, but it doesn’t look like they have yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if they spent a lot of the time trying to find ways to cover their ass before the game went gold.

  5. Bill Hoffnab says:

It’s literally never time to join the game industry. Just don’t do it.
